A major study published in Nature Communications reveals that in the United States every year over one billion birds are savagely killed by house cats. That may actually be underestimating the murder rate. The number could approach 4 billion birds on an annual basis. Sounds like a really nasty death toll—until one of them leaves a dropping on your parked car.

The puppy pound in San Francisco has a major problem. There’s not enough newspaper to line the dog cages. Supervisor Eric Zuercher calls his sheltered animals “poop machines.” They’re constantly cleaning and re-lining the cages. At one time, there was always a steady supply of donated newspapers. Now, most people reading the paper are going digital. And no one wants to line the puppy cages with iPads.
